Do you know what false cognates are? These are words that look and/or sound similar in two different languages, but have very different meanings. These tricky words are all around and they commonly get us thinking one thing when in fact they mean something else. So, let’s take a look into two very common verbs that are usually confusing for Portuguese learners of English.

To pretend – to behave as if something is true when you know that it is not, especially in order to deceive people.

ex.:   The children pretended they were dinosaurs while playing.

When he was asked what was going on, he pretended not to listen so he would not have to answer.

 

To intend – to want or have the intention to do something

ex.:  After I receive the money prize, I intend to save most of it.

How long do you intend to stay at the party?
