Easter is considered one of Christianity’s most important holidays. Eggs are possibly one of the most popular symbols associated with Easter. But why?

First of all, eggs are said to symbolize fertility and renewal. For many years, eggs have been used to represent rebirth and new life.
Another correlation made is that eating eggs – and some other food – during Lent (the 40-day period that precedes Easter Sunday) was prohibited by the Christian Church for centuries. After a long period of fasting, Ester Sunday became the traditional time to start eating eggs again. Paiting and decorating eggs became a popular tradition.

One of the most famous Easter events is The White House Egg Roll – an annual celebration where children roll Easter eggs down The White House lawn. Take a look at last year’s video:
How was your Easter Sunday?

Person, Persons, People, Peoples?

by Lilian Marchesoni

Did you know that the word person has two different plural forms?

The most common plural form is people, but did you know that persons is also correct?

Persons; however, is a very formal word, more frequently used in legal contexts.

Take a look at this example, taken from English Grammar Today, Cambridge:

Any person or persons found in possession of illegal substances will be prosecuted.

Nevertheless, the word people besides being the plural of person, can also be used as a singular noun. In this case, it means all the men, women, and children who live in a particular country, or who have the same culture or language; a society. Then, its plural form is peoples. Take a look at this example from Cambridge Dictionaries Online:

The French are known as a food-loving people.

Customs similar to this one are found among many peoples of the world.

Now, dear reader, I ask you:

What kind of person are you?

Travel x Trip

Many students confuse when to use the words travel and trip.

Here’s a quick explanation that is valid for most situations:

TRAVEL is a verb (action) – to move or go from one place to another

TRIP is a noun – a journey in which you go somewhere, usually for a shortime, and come back again.

So, you normally say:

John travelled over 80 miles to be at the wedding in Philadelphia.

The trip from New York to Philadelphia took about two hours by train.

However, there are some exceptions.

You can use travel as a noun, when it refers to the act of travelling. Take a look at the example below:

Travelling is difficult in that part of the country since there are no paved roads.

Are you ready for the July recess? Many people will have some time off in July and are travelling in this period. However, some people are not going to go on a trip.

What’s the best trip you’ve ever had? If you could choose anywhere in the world, where would you travel to?

If you’ve been to a restaurant abroad and tried to order meat, you’ve probably came across this question:

“How would you like your meat, sir?”

Do you know how to answer this question? It refers to how cooked you want your steak to be.

Color and temperature are key. The redder it is, the more rare the steak is.

rare = seared and very red in the center

medium rare = seared outside, a bit of pink showing inside

well done = cooked throughout, no pink

How do you prefer your steak?

Phrasal Verbs are challenging, but they are really important for English learners in everyday spoken and informal written language. By learning how to use phrasal verbs correctly, you will sound more natural in casual conversation. Take a look at the example below:

Can I just pick up on your first point, please?

Can I just start talking again about your first point, please?

Can you notice the difference? Can you see that the first example sounds more natural?

Instead of memorizing lists, learn the meaning of the most important and common phrasal verbs. You can easily do that with an app that Cambridge has launched. This is certainly a visually-enriched experience that will help you give a  boost to your English practice.

Is it possible to improve your English skills through songs? Are songs effective language learning tools?

The answer is YES! There is considerable scientific evidence that demonstrates how music can help learners improve grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation. Also, if you are constantly listening to music, this is going to be a win-win situation. Through songs, you might make some associations that will help your brain remember words. Learning the lyrics of your favorite songs will help you expand your vocabulary, teach you some slangs and idioms, and provide you with cultural aspects.

Our Basic and Flex Course Supervisor Vinícius Lemos is currently working on a project that shows students how to learn 100 new words with Mariah Carey lyrics. 100 words?? Isn’t that a lot? Follow us on Instagram @ctjonline. We will share Vini’s selected words to improve your English.

What about you? What new word have you learned with your favorite song?
